| Description |
English: Sheep grazing on the former bomb-storage park at Cae'r Mynydd This bomb-storage base, covering an area of between 3 and 4 square kilometres, was part of RAF Llanberis and was operational from the early 1940s to the mid-1950s. Even in the late forties it was guarded by armed MOD policemen who manned sentry boxes at the various gates. The main entrance to the base was in the left foreground of the photo. Here there was a large guardroom. From 1945 onwards HE bombs were daily transported on open back RAF lorries with civilian drivers to Llanberis for disposal in the disused quarries. One day one of these lorries collided with another vehicle outside the grammar school at Brynrefail. We were merely told to get on with our work. |
