Shore crabs fighting over a blue mussel in Holma Marina Club House in Holma, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.. - Photo series

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) fighting over a blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). - Photo series.

One crab found a mussel, opened it and started eating from it. This immediately attracted other crabs that came and tried to get access to the mussel. The mussel was located in the gravel between two larger stones. The first crab managed to hold them off, often violently, until a much larger shore crab showed up. It unceremoniously pushed away the first crab, lifted the mussel and carried it away to a new secure location where it finished the mussel in peace.
As the crabs fought, the water got muddier and darker. The wind also picked up, making waves, and distorting the view. A bunch of shrimps, both Baltic prawns (Palaemon adspersus) and rockpool shrimps (Palaemon elegans), were constant onlookers to the whole thing.

Photographed in the shallow water of Gullmarn fjord behind the Holma Marina Club House in Holma, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden.
