Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1894-1895 in the Gothic Revival style, this brownstone and pink sandstone church was designed by Crapsey and Brown for the Cincinnati First English Lutheran Church congregation. The church features a brownstone base and pink sandstone upper portion, with a front facade with a gable end at the sanctuary with a large gothic stained glass window, small pinnacles topped with copper caps and finials, three small gothic arched vents, six basement windows, and a sign for the church, with a circular sanctuary space clad in timber framing with gothic stained glass windows, and a conical roof with a copper finial to the rear, flanked by two lower sections, with the southern portion featuring the church’s front entrance with a gable parapet, quatrefoil motif at the top of the parapet, gothic arched opening for the entrance with a stained glass transom, decorative carved sandstone spandrel panel, and carved wooden door, and a wing to the north featuring another entrance with a gable over a gothic arched entrance with a stained glass transom and entry door, and a tall steeple with a belfry, tall pyramidal roof, pinnacles at he corners with copper caps, copper cables and pinnacles above the raised central vents on the belfry, and a copper cap at the top of the tower roof. The church is one of the finest small-scale examples of the Gothic Revival style in Cincinnati, though the tower has been threatened with demolition due to its deteriorating state, with the community coming together in an attempt to save it in 2021. The church is a contributing structure in the Over-the-Rhine Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
