English: Site of first printing press in Scotland In 1507 King James IV gave Chepman and Myllar a patent to set up a printing press. A copy of the 'Black Knight'is retained at the National Library for Scotland and presently (Oct.2008) on display in an exhibition there. They also printed the works of Dunbar, Henryson and Blind Harry, also the beautiful "Aberdeen Breviary". Chepman was a legal clerk and Myllar a bookseller.This plaque is located at the junction of Blackfriars
Street and the Cowgate, Edinburgh. |
