Summary[edit]

Description
English: One of the two rough sketches showing the Portuguese fort of São João Baptista de Ajudá, at Ouidah (Benin) included in a document from 1731 titled Memória da Fortaleza Cesárea que o capitão José de Torres levantou na Costa da Mina no Reino de Ajudá no vice-reinado do Brasil de Vasco Fernandes Cesar. The fort, built in 1721-1722 by José Torres, was initially named Fortaleza Cesárea in honour of the viceroy of Brazil Vasco Fernandes Cesar de Meneses.
The wall (G), is said to be eight [Portuguese] feet thick (made of dried mud mixed with hay), and the moat (H), 22 feet wide. Entrance to the fort is through a drawbridge (I). The circular tower in the middle of the fort (A) contains the gunpowder magazine and is topped by cannons.
