| Description |
English: Southend's Corporation Loading Stage in its death throes Although the photograph was taken in blinding sunshine its sombre hues are appropriate in the circumstances. The pier was built at the time of the First War to facilitate the unloading of coal destined for the Corporation's power station a mile or so away in London Road and adjacent to the tram depot. The coal was conveyed over the tramway itself in a fleet of three coal trams consisting of two hopper wagons with a cab at each end - which explained the presence of tram tracks on the jetty. By 1931 the practice had fallen into disuse when the Corporation changed from coal to diesel to generate its electricity. |
