Summary[edit]

Description
English: Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden (verifiable in Strasbourg from 1462-1473 Wiener Neustadt). Maria with child, so-called Dangolsheimer Madonna, 1463 (?). Walnut wood with a reduced original frame. Possibly created for the Marienkapelle in Strasbourg Cathedral, this sculpture is considered a major work of late Gothic sculpture. The figure seems to be set in motion - as if it were about to cross the plinth boundary. The naked child looks terrified into the distance, suspecting his future fate. At the same time it seems to be taking refuge under the veil of its mother. The figure of Mary hides relics in a hollow in the back and once wore a crown.
Deutsch: Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden (nachweisbar in Straßburg ab 1462-1473 Wiener Neustadt). Maria mit Kind, sog. Dangolsheimer Madonna, 1463 (?).
