DescriptionSpX-DM2 Welcome Home ceremony (jsc2020e031671).jpg |
English: NASA astronaut Douglas Hurley provides some remarks during a ceremony on Aug. 2, 2020, at Ellington Field near the agency’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston. The event welcomed home Hurley and crewmate Robert Behnken, following a successful splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico for NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission. Seated next to Hurley is Behnken, and behind them is Pat Forrester, chief, Astronaut Office, JSC. Off tothe right in the front is NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, behind him is Johnson Center Director Mark Geyer, second from right is Chief Engineer of SpaceX Elon Musk, and far right is NASA Deputy Administrator Jim Morhard. After spending two months in space, the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, carrying Behnken and Hurley, splashed down off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, at 2:48 p.m. EDT. Part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, Behnken and Hurley are the first astronauts to launch to the International Space Station from U.S. soil since the end of the shuttle program in 2011. The final flighttest for SpaceX, Demo-2 will pave the way for the agency to certify the company’s transportation system for regular, crewed flights to the orbiting laboratory.
