English: Canvas by C. Röhling, "Abmarsch französischer Truppen aus Spandau 27. April 1813", (1913), depicting the French napoléonic troops retreating in good order from Spandau – while being seen off by joyful inhabitants. Historical context : In the very first days of the "Befreiungskriege" ("German Wars of Liberation", declared on 17 March 1813 against napoléonic France), August von Thümen (1757-1826), then Generalmajor of the Prussian Army, besieged Spandau Citadel as of 31 March and coerced the French occupying troops to surrender on 27 April 1813 – as reminds a commemorative plaque at the entrance of the citadel. Canvas exhibited in Spandau Citadel Museum. |
