Summary[edit]

Description

(Old Faithful web camera screen capture provided by David Monteith.)

A rarely witnessed event transpired at Yellowstone, Wyoming during a storm on the afternoon of 27 June 2017 - lightning directly struck a geyser. This was captured on the park's streaming web camera (see: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmqLh93SNB0). Lightning struck near the summit of Split Cone Geyser. The energy volatilized some water in the geyser's upper plumbing system and converted it into steam, which can be seen issuing from the vent immediately following the lightning flash in the video. It is likely that a fulgurite is now present. Fulgurites are rare rocks formed by lightning-fused silica (usually loose surface sediments, such as sand or silt). The material at Split Cone Geyser is geyserite and weathered geyserite, which is composed of opal (= hydrous silica; opaline silica), SiO2·nH2O. It forms by precipitation from hot spring or geyser water.
