Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Spring Walk, Thetford In 1819 Thetford became a spa town. 'Taking the waters' was a fashionable activity at this time. The Mayor and the newly formed 'Thetford Mineral Spring Company' set out to add Thetford to the list of genteel spa resorts, alongside Bath and Matlock. The Duke of Grafton laid the first stone of the Pump Room, whilst the Mayor paid for a gravel path (Spring Walk) to "serve as a promenade for the invalids resorting to the spa". Sadly for Thetford fashion moved on and by the 1840s sea bathing had taken over from the spas.
