Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt Andrew, Heckington - geograph.org.uk - 474679.jpg |
English: St Andrew, Heckington Built of Ancaster stone the church of St Andrew has been worshipped in for over 600 years and is famous for its sedilia, piscina, Easter Sepulchre and tomb recess. It was partially restored in 1867 and again in 1877. The tower which has a ring of eight bells is 185 feet 10 inches high. The octagonal font is lead-lined and on three steps. The north aisle is the oldest part of the church and the least decorated.
The north transept was formerly used as a Chantry Chapel but was converted a few years ago to a vestry/meeting room. The south transept was formally known as the Winkhill aisle, once a Chantry Chapel, now a Lady Chapel. Stairs either side of the chancel led to a Rood Loft. Recessed into the chancel wall is the tomb of Richard de Potesgrave, chaplain to King Edward II as well as being rector of Heckington. Unusually there are two sets of Sedilia. The church seats about 700. |
