English: St Columba's church, Drumcliff and the past In St Columba's churchyard lies buried the famous Irish poet WB Yeats 1865-1939.
"Under bare Ben Bulben's head in Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid on limestone quarried near the spot, by his command these words are cut: 'CAST A COLD EYE ON LIFE, ON DEATH, HORSEMAN, PASS BY!'" On the left, rising above the skyline formed by Sliabh Mor (King's Mountain), is a Celtic high cross dating from about 1100. This cross and the 1152566 are all that remain of a monastery, founded by St Columba 521-597, which stood here http://www.a-wee-bit-of-ireland.com/eire_jan_2004/drumcliff_1.html |
