DescriptionSt Edmund's church in Southwold - Captain J Steele's Legacey - geograph.org.uk - 1933582.jpg | Captain John Steele's Legacy, 1710. He appears to be the same Captain John Steele buried in Rotherhithe Churchyard, Surrey, in 1710, a popular burial ground for captains of merchant ships. (Daniel Lysons, 'Rotherhithe', in The Environs of London: Volume 1, County of Surrey (London, 1792), pp. 470-477. http://www.british-history.ac.uk/london-environs/vol1/pp470-477 , p.473 [1]. He also appears to have made another testamentary bequest of £10 to the Charity School of Southwark Church, Surrey, also on the River Thames (The Natural History and Antiquities of the County of Surrey, Vol.5, London, 1719, p.15[2])). Arms: Argent, a bend chequy sable and ermine between two lion's heads erased gules on a chief azure three billets or (Steele) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.967) impaling: Sable a chevron between three lions rampant argent (Hales (?), per Papwoth, John Woody, Alphabetical Dictionary of Coats of Arms Belonging to Families in Great Britain and Ireland, Vol.I, London, 1874, p.888), for his wife. |
