Summary[edit]

Description
English: St Margaret's church - memorial. This monument is to Henry Marsham (d. 1692) who is depicted in a kneeling position with his wife Anne and their 12 year old son, who both died in 1678, and a baby daughter wrapped in swathing bands. See also > 740658. The tower of St Margaret's church is believed to have been substantially rebuilt in 1422. Inside, there are two doorways: one leading into the Marsham chapel, separated from the nave by a wooden screen and housing 17th century memorials to members of the Marsham family > 740657, and the other into the nave and chancel beyond. The church was greatly restored in the 19th century and the pulpit, lectern and desk as well as the organ date from this time. The large brass chandelier > 740642 was brought here from Russia. The north windows are inset with medieval glass, one containing a series of the four evangelists > 740645. There is a large stone effigy of a woman who holds her heart in one hand, in the northeastern corner of the nave; the name of the woman, who is referred to as the Black Abbess, is not known but she is presumed to have died around 1300 > 740648.
