Description
English: St Mary's Church, Tharston, Norfolk, mural monument to Robert Wood (d.1623) (source: Francis Blomefield, 'Hundred of Depwade: Tharston', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 5 (London, 1806), pp. 303-308 [1]):
Here resteth the Body of Robert Wood Esq; Sonn and Heire to Sir Robert Wood of Aylesham in the County of Norfolk Knt. who departed this Life in this Parish the 23 Day of May 1623. Here also resteth the Body of Anne Wood, Wife to the said Robert, Daughter and one of the Co-heirs of Robert Woolmer Esq; sometimes Clark of the Assizes for this Circuit; the said Anne departed this Life at her House at Brakene-Ash in this County, the 7th Day of Jan. 1646. The said Robert and Anne had Issue 3 Sons and 2 Daughters, Sir Robert their eldest Son, married Elizabeth the 3d Daughter of Sir Thomas Richardson Knt. late Chief Justice of the King's Bench. Edmond their 2d Son, married the Daughter of William Adams of Patterchurch in the County of Pembrookeshire Esq; Phillip 3d Sonn un-married. Frances their eldest Daughter married Thomas Fletcher of St. Edmonds-Bury in the County of Suffolk Esq; Alice the youngest Daughter married Anthony Penning of Little-Baddo in the County of Essex Esq.

Arms: Per pale argent and sable, on a chevron between three martlets as many trefoils all counterchanged (Wood). Per Farrer, Edmund, Church Heraldry of Norfolk, Vol 1 (1885), p.157[2], re monument in Beacon Ash Church, Norfolk, to "Robert Wood of Braken Ash, eldest son of Robert Wood and Ann his wife, one of the daughters of John Woolmer of Tha'son (Tharston.)".

Other information

1392740 - 1392789 - 1392812 as we see it today dates mainly from the 15th century. The church is surrounded by a spacious churchyard adjoined by fields on two sides. Restored in the late 19th century, the furnishings date from this time but three carved bench ends dating from the 15th century have been incorporated into newer benches > 1392807. The octagonal font > 1392814 dates from this time also. The stained glass > 1392804 in the chancel south window was made by Kings of Norwich. St Mary's contains a number of memorials to members of the Harvey family, the lords of the manor for many decades > 1392798. The Harvey mausoleum is situated in the southern section of the churchyard and was built in 1855 by General Sir R. Harvey who also has a wall monument > 1392796 on the chancel north wall. The church is kept locked but a key is available.
