Description

St Mary's Church, Huntingfield, Suffolk, mural monument to Anne Moulton (d. 1595), daughter of John Moulton, Esquire, who married thrice (as stated by the inscription):

  • 1: Nicholas Smithe of Huntingfield Hall;
  • 2: John Paston of Sporle, by whom she had a daughter Brigit Paston, wife of Sir w:Edward Coke (1552-1634), Attorney General to Queen Elizabeth I; (Edward Coke erected this monument)
  • 3: Edward Bedingfield of Oxborough Hall

Heraldry, from top down:

  • Top, in a lozenge-shaped escutcheon suitable for a female: Arms of Moulton, as seen here: Barry of six gules and or, on a chief of the second three martlets azure (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.712, but "Barry of six gules and argent" ("Moulton of Norfolk"); another variant: Argent, three bars gules in chief as many martlets azure ("Molton of Norfolk", Burke, p.694).   • Middle, left to right, for her three husbands:
    • Smithe (Gules, two arrows in saltire points downward or) impaling Moulton
    • Paston impaling Moulton
    • Bedingfield impaling Moulton
  • Bottom: quarterly of 4, impaling Paston, for her son-in-law Edward Coke, Attorney General to Queen Elizabeth I (who erected this monument), husband of Brigit Paston:
    • 1: Per pale gules and azure, three eagles displayed argent (Coke);
    • 2: Argent, a chevron between three chaplets azure
    • 3: Azure, a chevron between three covered cups or
    • 4: Gules semée of crosses-crosslet fitchée or, a griffin segreant of the last
