Summary[edit]

Description First page of the bill version of the Act to provide for the safekeeping of the Acts, Records, and Seal of the United States, and for other purposes, passed on September 15, 1789, which renamed the Department of Foreign Affairs to the Department of State, gave it custody of the Great Seal of the United States (and reaffirmed its use under the new government), and assigned several other domestic duties to the department.
