Description

Stevenage Bath House and the Hellard Almshouses, Church Lane, Stevenage Heritage Open Weekend, 12 September 2010.

The premises were built in 1835 as Stevenage's fire station, however, the town obtained a horse-drawn, steam-powered fire engine in the 1910s and it was too tall for the building. The new fire station was built in 1912 and the building was converted to a bath house. It opened in January 1913 and closed in about 1960. The original baths and fittings remain, as do the coal heater, gas-powered water heater, gas lamps and hot water controls that were operated by the attendant.

The Almshouses are next door (the four red doors in this photo).
