Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Stirling Arms Apartments (sic), 132 Sterling Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2022. A four-story brick apartment building of a type that's common enough elsewhere in the city but quite rare to see on a side street in the suburb-like North Park neighborhood, the design of the Stirling Arms is a rather humdrum affair at first glance, with simple flat-arched one-over-one sash windows and stone belt courses crowning the first and third floors, but closer inspection reveals subtle nods to the then-trendy Tudor Revival in the admittedly austere ornamentation: at the roofline there's a crenellated parapet sandwiched between a pair of shallow-pitched gablets; the entrance is off-center, understated and features small multi-paned windows, and small cut-stone panels on the façade sport shield reliefs. The Stirling Arms was built in 1928 at a cost of $50,000 by Genevieve Ostiguy, one of Buffalo's pioneer female real estate investors, and contains 14 market-rate apartment units.
