Stone inscribed with the name of Jalal al-Din Mangubirti. Islamic World Galleries, British Museum

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Stone inscribed with the name of Jalal al-Din Mangubirti, Production date Muharram 628/November-December 1230, made in Nishapur, Iran. Islamic World Galleries, British Museum; Museum notice Reference

British Museum website, registration 1990,0612.1

"The date of the stone is as remarkable and perplexing as its function. It is inscribed with the month of Muharram 628 (November 1230). This is very close in time to al-Nasawi’s story of the rain stones, but striking in terms of Jalal al-Din’s own history. It was made in the winter after he was defeated at Yassıc¸emen, when he had had to abandon Tamta and his possessions in Anatolia to go on the run. During these months the Mongols arrived specifically to hound him to his death. It shows that even as a fugitive Jalal al-Din had the wherewithal to transport this cumbersome object with him, and the time and interest to lavish craftsmanship on such an awkward and apparently functionless stone." in (in English) (20 April 2017) Tamta's World, Cambridge University Press, p. 339 ISBN: 978-1-107-16756-8.
