Studer J37 4-track tape recorder
(1964-1962)
As EMI had not yet made its own multi-track recorder, Abbey Road
Studios sought out the Studer Company of Switzerland in order to
buy these 4-channel recording machines. Beautifully modern and
functional, they were welcomed into Abbey Road for both studio
and location recordings. Soon, the process of 'bouncing' sound
from one tape machine to another made it necessary to buy more
of the J37 4-tracks. Several of the original 8 machines from this
period still remain.
The famous story of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band being
recorded on a 4-track machine is based upon The Beatles' intense
use of the Studer J37.
