While staying at Harmelschenburg, three musicians came to play at the cafe. Sue Sheehan, was from the States, and very friendly, so I got a little tour of all of the various medieval instruments that they play. A very talented trio! _____________________Hardly another guild may boast of such amazing and exhaustive familiarity with outlandish places, peoples, customs and traditions as the itinerant players, their revels bringing the stay-at-home folk a glimpse of the multifarious cultural curiosities of Occident and Orient. One of the most widely travelled of these troupes of troubadours is the Schallmeyer, their vagabondage taking them from Burgundy to Berlin and from Barcelona to Barkteheide, spreading astonishment and jollity in equal measure at courtly feasts and banquets where with sweet music from a cornucopia of instruments – bag pipes, lute, harp, psaltery, pandora, cornamuse, crumhorn and flutes - they conjure delight and delectation, at sprightly country dances where they put fire in the dancers’ hearts and springs in their heels with hurdy-gurdy, cittern, bagpipes, rauschpfeife, bombarde and rumbling drum, and of course ... http://www.sue-sheehan.de/musikbands/schallmeyer.html |
