English: Summer home on Alki, Seattle, ca. 1905 |

Description |
English: By the early 1900s, Alki had grown from a out-of-the-way campground to a full-fledged summer resort. Nestled along the beach were dozens of summer cottages, many with wistful names such as "Kill Time" and "La Siesta." This photo shows a sizable structure, similar to The Stockade, which was a popular hotel at Alki. The vacationers would come by ferry to enjoy the pleasures of hiking, boating, clam digging, and (as we see in this photo) reading and relaxing. Handwritten on sleeve: Summer home, Alki Point.
This house is still there at the corner of 59th Avenue SW and SW Andover St., though somewhat altered. |
