DescriptionT3 Pagoda - area ex Falck Unione.jpg |
Italiano: Comparto Unione area ex-Falck
English: T3 Pagoda - former Falck Union area
The T3 Pagoda electric furnace is one of the most conspicuous and significant buildings in the entire former Falck complex. Its colossal size and distinctive roof crown shaped like gigantic jaws gives it its nickname of Pagoda. The letter T stands for the Tagliaferri company of furnace builders. Visible from miles away, it is a strongly symbolic structure recalling the metalworking activities and the industrial character of the town. T3 dates back to the mid 20th century and all those who have lived in Sesto San Giovanni cannot fail to remember the continuous casting giving off steam and a reddish glare that lit up the whole town. The structure belonged to a continuum of buildings on the Stabilimento Unione site and was in fact the central building, of greatest significance. Also testifying to the importance of the manufacturing processes is the adjacent brick building that served as a changing room. The building is formed of four bays of different sizes and occupies an area of approximately 10,000 m2, with a height of approximately 30m, and a capacity of 140 tonnes. The interior consists of on e single continuous hall, which originally housed a two-valve electric furnace for two-way continuous casting. The most distinctive elements of the structure include the huge metal claws, positioned above the roofing of the central and east trusses. The building is placed in a brownfield area. It is part of the project of Sesto San Giovanni per l'UNESCO, as one of the buildings of the application for inscription on the world heritage list for humanity in the evolving cultural landscape category.
