Kinga nadała mu prawo własności do ziemi sądeckiej. Pierwsze budynki klasztorne oraz kościół pw. Świętej Trójcy i św. Klary powstawały od ok. 1285 r. Kościół konsekrowano w 1332 r. Pomimo licznych pożarów nawiedzających klasztor i kościół zawsze je odbudowywano. W 1605 r. zadanie wzniesienia murowanych budynków klasztornych powierzono krakowskiemu muratorowi Janowi di Simoni. Powstał klasztor złożony z czterech skrzydeł, którego krużganki obiegają wokół wirydarz. Na klasztornym dziedzińcu rośnie zabytkowa lipa, którą – według legendy – zasadziła św. Kinga. Fasadę furty klasztornej wieńczy trójkątny szczyt z wnękami, w którym znajdują się sgraffitowe postacie Chrystusa Salwatora, bł. Salomei, św. Klary, św. Kingi i św. Franciszka. Kingi sprowadzającej wodę do miasta. W klasztorze przechowywane są cenne rękopisy, m.in. Żywot błogosławionej Kingi pióra Jana Długosza oraz tzw. Graduał Sądecki z 2. poł. XIII w. Św. Kinga, córka króla Węgier Beli IV, przybyła do Polski, by poślubić Bolesława Wstydliwego. Oddał jej on we władanie całą ziemię sądecką. Po śmierci męża św. Kinga wstąpiła do zakonu franciszkańskiego. Zmarła w Starym Sączu w 1292 r. Została beatyfikowana w 1690 r., a w 1999 r. kanonizował ją papież Jan Paweł II. --- Tradition of St Kinga in Stary Sącz The convent of Poor Clares in Stary Sącz was founded around 1280 by Princess Kinga, the wife of Boleslaus the Modest (Bolesław Wstydliwy). At the same time she also endowed a Franciscan monastery, but this was abolished in 1782, and never reinstated. The first nuns arrived at the Stary Sącz convent from the Skała commune near Kraków. The convent of Poor Clares was placed on a steep slope over the old Poprad riverbed, now dried out. In addition to founding the nunnery, St Kinga endowed it with the rights to the lands of Sądeczczyzna. The construction of the first buildings for the convent, as well as the Church of the Holy Trinity and St Clare, commenced around 1285. The church was consecrated in 1332. In spite of numerous fires, which blighted the nunnery and the church, each time they managed to recover. In 1605, the Kraków mason Jan di Simoni was commissioned to erect new, brick buildings: this is when the cloister was built, surrounded with four wings of the convent. Growing in the convent’s courtyard is an ancient linden tree – according to legend, it was planted by St Kinga herself. The façade of the convent’s gate-keep is topped with a triangular attic with niches, hiding sgrafitto figures of Christ the Saviour, Blessed Salomea, St Clare, St Kinga, and St Francis. The Gothic body of the church reveals a Baroque interior. The murals, the work of Feliks Derysarz, depict scenes from the life of St Kinga; so do 17th-century paintings preserved on the sacristy door. On the 1779 stalls, St Kinga is portrayed bringing water to the city. In the side chapel devoted to the church’s founder, separated from the nave by an elaborate iron grating (of around 1470), the Gothic figure of St Kinga stands on an inverted crown, which symbolises her abandonment of royal power in order to follow the monastic life of contemplation. Below the figure, a silver coffin holds the ashes of the Saint. The Stary Sącz convent is also the resting place of St Kinga’s niece, Queen Jadwiga, the wife of King Ladislaus the Elbow-High (Władysław Łokietek). The convent treasures some valuable manuscripts, including ‘The Life of Blessed Kinga’ by chronicler Jan Długosz and the so-called ‘Sącz Graduale’ with chants, dating to the second half of the 13th century. St Kinga, daughter of the Hungarian king Bela IV, came to Poland in order to marry Bolesław Wstydliwy. Her husband endowed Kinga with the Sącz lands. When the king died, the widowed queen entered the Franciscan convent. She died in Stary Sącz in 1292. She was beatified in 1690, and in 1999 Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a saint.
