Summary[edit]

Description
English: Talbot Village, cottages Talbot Village was a model village built by sisters Georgina & Marianne Talbot, to help alleviate local poverty, between 1850-1862. The village contained 19 cottages, each set in one acre of land, with water tank, pigsty, 3 bedrooms, 2 living rooms and kitchen. Tenants paid 4s to 6s per week; they were not allowed to carry on a trade, but to sell their local produce: poultry, eggs, bacon, milk, flowers, fruit & jam. The estate also contained 6 small farms with grazing land, school, almshouses, and, from 1867, a church. Most of the cottages are surrounded by tall hedges, and because they are set in large grounds, it is very easy to pass by & not realise their significance.
