Description

El M48 Patton es un tanque de guerra, tercer tanque medio de la serie Patton, que recibieron este nombre por el General George S. Patton, comandante del Tercer Ejército estadounidense durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y uno de los militares estadounidenses que abogaba por el empleo de tanques de guerra en el campo de batalla.

El M48 A3 nace en 1959, se le añade un motor AVDS-1790 de gasoil, una nueva cubierta de motor y un sistema de tiro mejorado.

Utilizado principalmente como apoyo de la infantería, el M48A3 fue el tanque de batalla principal de Estados Unidos en Vietnam al principio de la guerra, y de Vietnam del Sur casi hasta el final.

Las anchas orugas del M48A3 le dieron buena movilidad fuera de las carreteras, pero el lodo de los terrenos de Vietnam no lo favoreció. Su poca profundidad de remolque y y su peso limitaba su empleo.

Disponía de un kit que permitía al tanque vadear ríos de hasta 4 metros de profundidad, pero rara vez se usaba.
