Summary[edit]
DescriptionTantallon Castle - geograph.org.uk - 1803464.jpg |
English: Tantallon Castle Tantallon Castle was built in the 1350s and was the seat of the Earls of Douglas, who were a prominent family in Scottish history due to an association with Robert the Bruce.
The castle itself was only known to have seen action on three occasions, in all cases rebelling against the ruling authority. In 1491, James IV besieged the castle after the Earl of Douglas entered into a pact with Henry VII of England. In 1528, James V besieged the castle after escaping following being held prisoner as a youth by the Earl of Douglas in Edinburgh, although this siege was known to be unsuccessful. Finally, in 1651 a small garrison of Scottish troops attempted to hold out against Cromwell's forces, but with improved artillery the castle was vulnerable to attacks from the flanks, and most of the damage seen today was inflicted and the castle was abandoned. |
