State of Washington 75 THE SPOKANE COUNTRY. From the city of Spokane all corners of the Inland Empireare easily reached. Five transcontinental lines enter the cityand two others operate trains; while a network of electric linesserves the immediate vicinity, penetrating the territory asfar south as Colfax, Palouse, and Moscow; southwest to MedicalLake and Cheney; and eastward to Hayden Lake and CoeurdAlene. Highways have been built through the most scenicsections along the river valleys and up into the mountains. Eachmode of transportation unfolds a different panorama. The hillsnearest Spokane are covered with a dense growth of pine. Far-ther away are forests of pine, fir, cedar, and tamarac, conceal-ing many lakes teeming with trout and black bass. Within aradius of a hundred miles are fifty mountain lakes, thirty-eightof which are ideally located and supplied with all necessary equip-ment for camping. They include Pend Oreille, the second larg-est fresh water lake in the United State
