Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Ellen Strange Cairn - geograph.org.uk - 85066.jpg |
English: The Ellen Strange Cairn. This grid square is mostly open moorland, with the odd farm, but it is broken up by the Ellen Strange cairn and monument. The cairn reputedly marks the site where Ellen Strange was murdered by her husband (or lover in some reports) in about 1750. The stone was added in 1978.
A site visitor adds this information found in local history archive - Ellen Strange lived with her parents at Ash Farm near Edgworth. The year was 1842 and Ellen had formed a friendship with a travelling pedlar. One day the couple visited nearby Hasligden fair and were seen to leave together. After calling at the White Lion Hotel in Helmshore they disappeared Ellen apparently meeting her death at a spot about 200 yards west of 553378 The pedlar was later found and committed for trial at Lancaster Court and on being sentenced he confessed his guilt. The Cairn is approximately 8 feet in diameter and 5 feet high with the custom being for anyone passing to add another stone |
