Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Façade and Campanile 02.jpg |
English: The façade was designed in 1743 by Ferdinando Fuga, and he brings chiarascuro into the design, mixing light and shadow. The loggia here is the Loggia of Blessings, where the Pope could bless the crowd. The lower statues are of Nicholas Albergati by Filippo Della Valle (left), and St Charles Borromeo by Francesco Queirolo (right).
The statue of Our Lady is by Giuseppe Lironi, and the four statues of Popes are difficult to decide, as are which artists completed them. We know the artists were Agostino Corsini, Carlo Monaldi, Bernardino Ludovisi and Carlo Marchionni, and the statues are attributed to them from left to right. The mostly Romanesque campanile is the highest one in Rome, at 75 metres. It was rebuilt between 1370 and 1378 on the orders of Pope Gregory XI on his return to Rome from Avignon, replacing an earlier one damaged in an earthquake. |
