Summary[edit]

Description

The furthest we got was onto the River Bure and going past the remains of St Benets Abbey.

As we went back and forward onto the River Bure, we went past the destination of the trip on the Broads - to go past St Benets Abbey - and here it is. Once we passed it and the other ruins (and the cross) the boat turned around to make it back to Fairhaven Woodland & Water Garden.

It is Grade II* listed and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Remains of Benedictine Abbey. Founded 1020, fell into disrepair 1545. Date of remains probably C14. Flint with ashlar dressings. Positions of west tower, nave, transept, aisled chancel and chapter house identifiable from surviving fragments. Side buttresses and plinth courses with knapped flushwork. Scheduled Ancient Monument, County number 6.
