Summary[edit]

Description
English: Some time in the late 1800's, an Italian author named Edmondo de Amicis published a series of travel books with titles like "Spain”, “Morocco”, “Holland” etc. The latter title was very popular and the 13th edition was translated into English and published in the USA and Canada with a copyright date of 1894. The first volume (of a two volume set) of “Holland” contains chapters about Holland in general, Zealand, Rotterdam, Delft, and The Hague. (Presumably the second volume continues this journey further north and east to places like Leeuwarden and Groningen but I don’t have a copy so that is guesswork). The book contains several “photo plates”, a number of them in chapter on The Hague. To somebody familiar with that city as it is today, these glimpses into the past provide a fascinating window into what it looked like just before the automobile came on the scene.
