On October 28, 2012, the NOAA/NASA Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite celebrated its first anniversary in orbit. In honor of that, the satellite acquired this composite image of the nighttime lights of the continental U.

English: On October 28, 2012, the NOAA/NASA Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite celebrated its first anniversary in orbit. In honor of that, the satellite acquired this composite image of the nighttime lights of the continental U.S. assembled from data in April and October 2012. The image was made possible by the Day-Night Band of the satellite's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument, which detects light in a range of wavelengths and uses filtering techniques to observe low-light sources such as city lights, gas flares, auroras, wildfires and reflected moonlight. How many cities can you identify from their lights?
