Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Gray wolf subspecies known as the Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes) is a member of the Canidae family within the Canis genus. These apex predators are renowned for their ferocity and are considered one of the most formidable in their family. Interestingly, historical records indicate that wolves were once domesticated animals and served as companions to humans many years ago. The Indian wolf shares a striking resemblance to other Central Asian wolf species in terms of appearance. One notable characteristic of these remarkable creatures is their ability to adapt and thrive in diverse climates.

Indian wolves are found in India, #Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Israel, Turkey, Iran, and Syria. They live in open grasslands, thorn forests, and scrublands.

In Indian mythology, there is a fascinating story in the Rig Vedas about Rijrsava, who was blinded by his father as punishment for generously giving one hundred and one sheep from his family's flock to a she-wolf. It is interesting to note that the words "bhediya" (wolf) and "bhed" (sheep) are etymologically related, highlighting the connection between these two animals. In addition, certain wolf-like qualities such as gluttony and an insatiable appetite were associated with Bhima, who earned the nickname "Vrikodara," which means "wolf-stomached." And let us not forget Mowgli, our very own wolf boy. It is worth mentioning that even in British India, there were instances of children raised by wolves.

The presence of wolves significantly impacts the population and behavior of their prey. This leads to alterations in the browsing and foraging patterns of prey animals, as well as their movements across the land.
