English: The beams, Crofton The defining feature of a beam engine - the beam. In this case, two of them.
The curved wooden structures keep the public away from the catch-wings as they swing in an arc. The catch-wings bring the engine to a halt in the event of an overstroke. Being non-rotative engines they require great skill and eternal watchfulness to prevent possible damage. |
