Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe deathplace of Flora MacDonald - geograph.org.uk - 1612132.jpg |
English: The deathplace of Flora MacDonald. These are the remains of Peinduin Farmhouse, in the deserted settlement of Peinduin on the west coast of Trotternish. It is the largest building in the village, which is known to have existed since the mid 17th century and to have been deserted by the later part of the 19th century.
Flora MacDonald died in this house on 4th March 1790. Some sources say that she lived here for the last few months of her life, but most accounts say that she still resided at Kingsburgh and was visiting a friend here at Peinduin when she was taken ill and died suddenly. Whichever is correct, it seems widely accepted that she did not die at Kingsburgh, making the inscription on her grave 636135 at Kilmuir incorrect, albeit by only a couple of miles. |
