Description |
English: The Scottish-Belgian painter and engraver John Heaviside Clark (1771-1863) visited the site the morning after the battle and made sketches. His unusual painting depicts the scenery in a drastic way. With over 53,000 deaths left in the battle, the landscape near Waterloo was littered with the corpses and wounded the next morning. Cruelty and busyness collide in the depiction: women with their children search for their husbands or relatives among the bodies, soldiers rescue the injured, graves are dug. In the background lie corpses whose uniforms have been ripped off. |
