Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe old engine shed at Porth Penrhyn.jpg |
English: North Wales. The old engine shed at Porth Penrhyn. The port was greatly extended in 1795 and a tramway from the Penrhyn quarries was constructed to convey the slate from that quarry for transport by slate schooners to major ports and thence to the rest of the world. It was said at the time that slate from the north Welsh quarries roofed the world.
Once loaded at the quarry a brake wagon and a ‘dolly’ wagon was attached to the loaded slate wagons. As the quarry was at a higher elevation than the port gravity ensured the loaded wagons would run downhill to the port, hence the brake wagons. Horses were loaded aboard the dolly wagon and they hauled the empty wagons back to the quarry. In 1825 with the advent of steam engines, an engine shed was constructed at Penrhyn. The narrow gauge ran until 1962 when due to the infinite wisdom of the bean counters, the track was torn up resulting in a loss of a money making tourist attraction the area. The shed is now used by a wooden boat repair company. The floor of the shed has been resurfaced with concrete but in such a way that the evidence of the old rails remain. |
