| Description |
English: The park at Saltram. Saltram is surrounded by parkland carefully designed to complement the house. Here we look from within the Garden near the main entrance along the drive out into the parkland. The woodland on the horizon was once part of the Saltram Estate, it is Hardwick Wood and is now owned and managed by the Woodland Trust. Between the parkland and the wood the A38 dual carriageway runs in a deep cutting, see 839589 in which Hardwick Wood is on the left and Saltram Park behind the trees on the right. The cutting was built in the 1970's and lowered the water table in Hardwick Wood, making it more susceptible to dry summers and possibly contributing to the significant damage and tree loss the wood suffered in the notorious "Hurricane" of the early 1990's. |
