Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe ruins of Trefin Mill, Aber Draw - geograph.org.uk - 1518296.jpg |
English: The ruins of Trefin Mill, Aber Draw Melin Trefin/Trefin Mill was in use by the villagers of Trefin for around 500 years. Wheat was milled into flour for bread and barley was ground into winter feed for cattle and pigs. By 1900 cheap grain from overseas was being milled in local towns in much bigger mills. The mill eventually closed in 1918. A leat, diverted from the nearby stream, just out of shot to the right, would have provided the power to turn the large outside wheel, (now removed).
The pair of grinding stones (the mill) had a complex pattern of grooves carved into the faces which acted like scissors on the grain, cutting it and moving it outwards along the sloping furrows, until, as flour, it dropped into the collecting box around the edge of the stones. The Mill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. |
