Notes Illustrated with color printed wood engravings. From the series of One Shilling Toy Books. Printed on the title page: Narrated, invented, and drawn on the wood by Charles H. Bennett. Bennett enjoyed the rare identification as the artist of a toybook, largely because he worked his name into the cover illustration. This book is filled with cautionary tales in verse that warn children against being greedy, contradictory, truant, talkative, vain, slouchy, and dainty. For each tale, there is an accompanying image that shows the child who has exhibited this bad behavior being transformed into an animal or distorted human figure.

The title page depicts all of the characters in their final forms: Greedy Jem, Positive Peter, Truant Tom, Talkative Toby, Vain Valentine, Crooked Christopher, and Dainty Dick.
