Three First National Plaza Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Date: 1981 Style: Modernism Address: 70 West Madison Height: 767 ft. (57 Stories) Materials: Carnelian granite, tinted glass Program: Retail Space, Office The Three First National Plaza Building was built in a saw tooth shape as a means of avoiding the disruption of views from nearby buildings, however, by doing so, has become a unique building in the Chicago skyline. Upon entering the nine story atrium, Henry Moore’s sculpture known as the “Large Internal-External Upright Form” is seen. The tower’s tube-like structure allows for strong wind resistance, a column-free interior, as well as many office spaces with an extraordinary view of the city. |
