The tombs of four Achaemenid kings are a short distance from Persepolis. All four are visible in this photo. To see which is which (according to our learned tour guide), scroll over the photo to read the notes. The name of this site is Naqsh-e Rustam (in Persian: نقش رستم Nāqš-e Rostām); it is about 12 km northwest of Persepolis, in Fars province, Iran. Thus sayeth Wikipedia. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naqsh-e_Rustam" rel="nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naqsh-e_Rustam</a> In addition to the tombs, which are said to have been looted when Alexander the Great sacked Persepolis, Naqsh-e Rustam features a number of bas-relief carvings on the rock walls below the tombs. The carvings date to the Sassanid dynasty, which ruled Persia from 224 to 651 of the Common Era. As a reference point, the Achaemenid era, to which the tombs belong, ended in 330 B.C.E. |
