Construída no século XVI por ordem dos juízes, Diogo de Aguiar e Garcia Rodrigues, dos vereadores, Gonçalo Luís e Álvaro Esteves e pelo procurador do concelho, Pero Rodrigues, como símbolo de poder do município, daqui se avista o núcleo quinhentista da vila e os seus principais edifícios desse período. Torre robusta, coroada de merlões, com uma porta quinhentista, possuiu um relógio e um sino com o qual o alcaide convocava as assembleias. Teve como edifício contíguo, a antiga câmara municipal, convertido em cadeia nas primeiras décadas do século XX. A sua localização, na urbe original da vila, virada para o rossio, para onde todas as ruas confluem, confere-lhe a qualidade de atalaia e mirante.
