Summary[edit]
DescriptionTrams at Wakebridge, 1980 (geograph 6539684).jpg |
English: Glasgow 812, Gateshead 5 and Southampton 45 at the Wakebridge tram stop at the National Tramway Museum, Crich, Derbyshire, UK. On the left is the former Glasgow tramway crossing, which provides a record of a specific feature of Glasgow's tramways. The track gauge was very slightly narrower – 4 ft 7 ¾ inches - than the normal standard 4 ft 8 ½ inches. This was done to enable railway wagons to use tram tracks to access the Fairfield shipyards in Govan. Railway wagons have a very different wheel profile to tramways which required this unusual feature. |
