Summary[edit]

Description
English: This is a small preview of things to come with one of our nearest and dearest galaxies, M33. You may remember the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury (PHAT) from a little while back, which saw the Andromeda galaxy imaged as only Hubble can do. Well, that's happening again similarly with the Triangulum, and this is a small 3x3 chunk of the currently available data in blue and near-ultraviolet. The eventual result will be less extensive than the PHAT, but I have hopes that it will result in an image that is in no way less stunning.

Most of the wavelengths in this image are just beyond the blue side of the human eye's visible spectrum. Data from these shorter wavelengths tends to have a much lower signal-to-noise ratio because the detectors are less sensitive in this range, so it's difficult to deal with. I have cranked the contrast up quite tremendously. If you view the image close-up, it looks pretty harsh. Sized down for web display it's not so bad, though.

Sometime in February 2018, this program will hopefully finish up and we'll have two more filters to add, which should help bulk up the overall brightness of the image and significantly improve the richness of the colors.

Data from the following proposal was used to create this image: A Legacy Imaging Survey of M33

Red: WFC3/UVIS F336W Green: pseudo Blue: WFC3/UVIS F275W

North is around 12° clockwise from up.
