Description

This is a photomicrograph of a female ham mite, a species of the suborder Sarcoptiformes.

There are over 200 families of mites, many being parasitic on plants and animals. The parasitic forms produce dermatitis, and some species are etiological agents of mange and scabies; species in the genus Trombicula are vectors for scrub typhus.
