English: Sugar plantation 'Catharina Sophia' by the Saramacca River
Nederlands: Aquarel. Waterverfschildering van de plantage Catharina-Sophia, een suikerplantage, toentertijd Sukrugron in de lokale taal, Sranan Tongo genoemd, aan de Saramacca-rivier. De plantage was gelegen tussen de koffieplantage Anna-Maria stroomopwaarts, en aan de plantage Judas-hoop stroomafwaarts.
Catharina Sophia was in de tweede helft van de 18de eeuw de grootste suikerplantage van Suriname. De suikerrietpers werd gevoed middels een riettransporteur. De bijbehorende stoommachine is er niet meer. Ook de suikerkookinstallatie is allang verdwenen. Wel werden in de kanalen nog "pondo's" gevonden, waarmee vroeger het riet naar de fabriek werd gebracht. Verder waren er overal losse bakstenen en dakpannen, maar geen complete funderingen. Ook de sluizen zijn in de loop der tijd afgebroken. Later werd de plantage een der belangrijkste productiecentra van het bedrijf Staatsolie.. Suikerplantage Catharina-Sophia aan de Saramacca |
